Dearly beloved, we are here today to join the families of Jacob and Ruby (aka Georgie). Here is a book that I absolutely fell in love with. Yes, I know I always say this about every other book I read but I'm serious! When I first opened this up (at the library when I waited over an hour for some dentist appointment). It immediately caught my attention. The story of a high school sophomore. She began writing a book titled The Heart Stealer. It vowed critical acclaim, even buzzing her English teacher who once told her she had "drivel and poop" writing. Her fame and stardom boosted her self esteem. She was granted imminent popularity, the hottest boyfriend of the whole school. She was the center of attention. Of course, like any good book would lead, her stardom burned out. She was accused of plagiarism.
She did the only thing she could do on her own. She ran away to the small town of Whispering Oaks to settle for a while with her kooky aunt. She owned the Curious Cup, the neighborhood diner/ tourist shop/ would be book store. Ruby took on an alias of Georgie O'Dell claiming to be a cousin of her aunt. At first, she wasn't expecting to enjoy the small town of Whispering Oaks. Soon she knew everything about the legend Mattie and Eamon. Two forbidden lovers, whose spirits haunted the woods. Little did she know, she fell in love with someone who shared the exact same qualities she possed. Their interests sparked their "forbidden or just unlikely" relationship with Jacob. He was a country boy, she from the city. Reminiscient of the budding romance of Mattie and Eamon. She even made a best friend, coincidentally her Jacob's sister Wilma aka Rabbit. (Talk about all these nicknames, I woulda thought she would be able to fit in in this town.) Together they all discovered the mysteries of the legend.
Georgie was inspired to start a book club/ poetry reading at the Curious Cup. Fortunately, her aunt was reluctant as she also long wanted to sell books. Bring some personality into the community. All they did was sit around the Lake in the woods. Amazingly, the entire community really enjoyed the book club. They all participated in the event. Within a week, the entire town became booklovers. Orders came rushing in for books that they wanted to read. It didn't matter that the Curious Cup was raking in double their revenue, but the town had something ese in common, the love of literature. From the range of romance novels to children's books.
Unfortunately, the annoying Mr. Canker wanted to demolish the Curious Cup to make room for more hotels and residencies. Georgie was enraged. Using the power of her own words and fury. She wrote an open letter that at first was just to flush out her anger. But it soon became published in the local newspaper that Jacob's parents published. She encouraged the entire town to get together and strike against the demolishment.
Wouldn't you know it, the very same spokesperson who exposed her alleged plaigarism walked into that very tourist shop/diner. She was exposed yet again. Only this time, she finally decided to take these matters in her own hands. She ran into her issue headon. Admitting, that yes, she did plaigarize, but the strong movement that she began was completely real, and it didn't change her love for books and the power of the written word.
One thing that was different from the other books I read, was that she was accepted the way she was. Forgiven for her dishonesty. She was even understood by her boyfriend. And although this story envelops around their little romance, the mystery of Mattie and Eamon was finally solved. Mattie's corpse was found in the hidden cellar of the Curious Cup. It became a historic landmark, which cranky Mr.Canker could not touch anymore. That's right. Kiss my book!
